Exhibit Description

Nonsense and Hopeful Songs: My Inner Fight to Be Heard features recent paintings and collected poems by autistic, nonspeaking artist c.l. lunn. Charles’s message of love, acceptance and compassion extends to the families and children with autism spectrum disorder and beyond, to all humanity. Rich in bold, gestural strokes, layered planes and hidden depths, his impassioned art distills the underlying rhythms and little absurdities of everyday events to the tune of his body moving freely through space as he applies paint to paper with brush and roller. Charles communicates through RPM (Rapid Prompt Communication) and a CP (Communication Partner), who is trained to provide prompts and support to help an individual, like Charles, develop purposeful motor skills and achieve synchrony between brain and body. Pointing to individual letters on a spelling board, Charles creates striking poems, conjuring luminous images in the mind’s eye. “I invite you to join on a promenade of joyful discovery in the dark shadows and bright lights of my innermost spaces and hope viewers are, if not moved substantially, then at least curious. All good art should cause us to get challenged in our thinking.”—c.l. lunn.
