TREASURED
Survivors of Modern Slavery
Charcoal Portraits by Christina Chan
Today there are approximately 50 Million people being held against their will in modern slavery. The global economy profits $236 billion dollars a year from forced labor, sex trafficking, and involuntary marriage. From smartphones and fashion to chocolate, sugar and bananas, modern slavery enables convenience and subsidizes modern living.
In TREASURED: Survivors of Modern Slavery, self-taught art activist, Christina Chan, humanizes horrendous statistics by connecting facts to faces. She’s dedicated HUNDREDS of hours to meticulously drawing the people featured in TREASURED. They are survivors of modern slavery whom Chan has gotten to know through conversation and research. They are normal people dealing with extraordinary circumstances; fighting for change, healing from trauma, and reintegrating into society.
Chan invites us to honor survivors with our time and attention, to confront the stolen moments and lost life experiences, and to connect with their profound humanity. By engaging in this mindful act, delicate drawings bloom into cherished individuals, embodying resilience and the strength of the human spirit.
